Light is the focus of ecological and award-winning Finnish design
LED1 designed by Mikko KärkkäinenHabitare, Finland’s largest furniture, interior decoration and design fair, continues its programme of special exhibitions focusing on ecological design. The 2009 fair featured an EcoDesign chair exhibition, and the theme of the second EcoDesign exhibition in 2010 will be light.
World-renowned lighting designer Ingo Maurer of Germany has been invited to curate the light exhibition. He will invite both top-class designers and young talent from Finland and elsewhere to come up with novel concepts that promote sustainable development and a more ecological future. All specially designed for the occasion, the exhibition will feature approximately 80 new designs.
The EcoDesign light exhibition will be produced by Advertising Agency Valo and the Finnish Fair Corporation. It will be on view at the Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre throughout Habitare 2010, from September 1st to 5th.
Habitare 2010 will also feature a new lighting industry event, “Light”. The event will present lighting for a wide range of applications and introduce new products and technology. The event will be targeted at professionals from architects and interior designers to property owners.
Three lighting fixtures by Finnish designers and manufactured by Finnish companies have earned recent international recognition.
LED1, designed by Mikko Kärkkäinen and manufactured by Tunto Design, won the prestigious and coveted international red dot design award in the product design category in 2009. LED1 was also nominated for Designpreis Deutschland 2010 (Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2010).
LED1 and the Soihtu wall lamp by Jukka Korpihete and manufactured by Lundia won two of the GOOD DESIGN Awards in 2009, the world’s oldest and highly prestigious design awards.
The Medusa lamp, designed by Mikko Paakkanen and manufactured by Saas Intruments, took the Gold Prize of the Legacy for the Future Design Awards 2009, one of the components of the DESIGN KOREA 2009 design business event. The theme of the 2009 edition of this annual event was “Design, Engine of Green Growth”. Medusa won a Fennia Prize, major Finnish design awards, in 2009. It is a kinetic light fixture incorporating LED lights.
