World Design Capital Seoul 2010

The World Design Capital 2010 is the South Korean capital Seoul.

Seoul’s vision for its design year is Universal Design. This is a concept for simplicity, convenience and happiness to all users, emphasizing the philosophy of social equality and materializing higher human values.

As the World Design Capital 2010, Seoul declares to have a dream – a dream to be reborn as an attractive cultural city. Seoul’s World Design Capital project sees the ultimate value of design in creating a harmonious society. Seoul envisions a city that allows seamless communication anywhere and anytime. The new, information-oriented Seoul is a sustainable city where problems associated with over-population, traffic congestion and employment are eliminated.

The World Design Capital Seoul seeks to create a city of “Design for All” that is full of joy for its citizens, creating it together with its citizens. Seoul envisions a comfortable and sustainable city that is centred on people – where aesthetic, functional, environmental and social aspects of the design industry are all focused on people.

Seoul’s vision towards the World Design Capital will be completed when citizens share the vision and participate in making this vision come true. Citizens’ awareness of design gives competitive edge to the design industry and, further, to the city itself.

Seoul’s Calendar of Events for 2010 includes exhibitions, citizens’ events, competitions, conferences and workshops. The symbol of the year will be the Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
