Foundation to manage World Design Capital Helsinki 2012
A new foundation will be established to manage the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 project, according to a Helsinki City Council decision of June 2, 2010. The foundation will be named International Design Foundation (Kansainvälinen designsäätiö in Finnish, and Internationella Designstiftelsen in Swedish).
The foundation will be established by the City of Helsinki, which will make a partnership agreement on the design year’s management with the other participating cities Espoo, Vantaa, Kauniainen and Lahti, and possible other participating parties. The cities will hand over the executive power of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 project to the new foundation.
The foundation will have a Board of Directors with nine members. The foundation will also have a governing body with no more than 45 members. The governing body will be in a counselling role. The director of the foundation will manage and develop the foundation’s operations as defined by the Board, and execute the Board’s decisions.
The foundation will manage all financing for the project. The total cost of the design year’s events, executive organization and communications is estimated to be 15 million euros. The participating cities will together provide 6 million, the Finnish State 5 million directly, and other sources 4 million euros for the project.
